Morning started of promising. Made my first drift and immediately got a strike but didn't get hooked. About 100' feet later, another rod bend and this one is on the yak. A healthly looking 17" speck.
Turned around and trolled against the current and got another knock-down but nothing hooked.
Paddled down to target the puppies. Saw a bunch of fish working the top and threw the top water plug but no hits. Got a few short strikes on the jig casting towards the surface breaks. I'm thinking it was small stripers.
Started casting for puppies and got a fish on my first few casts. Ended up being a perch. The current was perfect as it was moving the yak slow enough to work the shoreline without needing to paddle or change directions.
After a few more minutes, I get a good strike and hook up. Nice drum based on the fight. Ended up being 16" with a beautiful blue highlights in the tail.
Needed to start working my way back to the launch and trolled back but no hits no the way.
Casted at the "hump" before heading in and was rewarded with two specs. One going 19" and the other a bit shorter at 17".
Another beautiful morning on the river with no boat traffic and no wind.
Lost a few minutes today having to re-tie my newly spooled Penn Fierce 3000 several times. Lots of line twists as expected. Hopefully got them all out today.
Speaking of reels, I really like the Fierce reel. Have 2 now - one on a M rod and one on a ML rod. It's Penn's lowest end saltwater reel but based on the reviews, is up there with the higher models like the Battle. No complaints from me so far and won't kill the bank account if one finds it's way to Davey Jones' locker.
